Is mold behind my AC dangerous to sleep near?« Back to Previous Page

Our bedroom AC unit in our Jumeirah Village Triangle villa has been leaking a bit, but we've been putting off calling maintenance. I just pulled the curtain back and found a patch of black and green mold, about the size of my hand, spreading on the wall behind it. How urgently do I need to get this treated, and should we be sleeping in this room tonight?

A leaking AC unit creating mold growth behind it is a health concern that requires immediate attention, especially in Dubai's climate. The high humidity here provides a constant source of moisture, allowing mold to thrive. You should not sleep in that room tonight.

The primary risk is inhaling elevated levels of mold spores, which are released into the air as the colony grows. This can cause significant respiratory irritation, allergic reactions (sneezing, congestion, itchy eyes), and worsen conditions like asthma. The size of the patch indicates an active, established colony. In the UAE's tightly sealed, air-conditioned homes, these spores circulate continuously, increasing exposure.

For a proper remediation, you need a professional inspection. The visible mold on the wall is likely just the surface manifestation; the leak has almost certainly caused growth within the wall cavity itself. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the full extent of the damage behind the wall. The AC unit and its drip pan will also need a thorough inspection and cleaning by an HVAC technician to stop the source of the leak.

Until it is professionally addressed, keep the room closed off, ensure your home is well-ventilated, and consider using a dehumidifier to help lower the indoor humidity level, which can help slow further growth.
