Black mold behind wardrobe on outside wall in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots spreading along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and we're in a villa in Mirdif. Is this dangerous black mold, and what's the best way to get it properly treated here in Dubai?

The black, speckled growth behind your wardrobe is likely mold, and its location on an exterior wall in a villa is a classic indicator of a condensation issue. In Dubai's climate, the extreme outdoor heat meets the chilled interior air from your AC, causing moisture to condense on cooler surfaces like that exterior wall. This trapped moisture, especially behind furniture that restricts airflow, creates the perfect environment for mold. While the term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys, many species appear black and require lab analysis to identify.
This situation warrants professional assessment. The mold you see is often just the surface growth; the main issue is the moisture problem within the wall cavity. A proper inspection involves using a moisture meter to quantify the dampness inside the wall and identifying the exact condensation point. For villas, this is critical to prevent structural damage. Treatment requires a two-step approach: first, solving the moisture source, and second, safely remediating the mold. Simply wiping it away is insufficient and can aerosolize spores. The underlying condensation may require improved insulation, a dehumidification strategy, or redirecting AC airflow. For confirmed, widespread growth, remediation should follow standards like those from the IICRC, which include containment and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination. After remediation, a post-testing verification ensures the spore count inside the wall cavity has returned to a normal level. |
