Could black mold from an AC leak cause coughing?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly for the past month and we can't seem to shake it. I just pulled our sofa away from the wall in the living room of our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold spreading from the corner, probably from a hidden AC leak. We spend most of our time in that room. Could this mold be the reason for their persistent coughs and headaches?

Yes, the black mould you found is very likely the cause of your family's persistent coughs and headaches. The continuous exposure from spending so much time in that room, combined with children's generally higher sensitivity, creates a perfect storm for these respiratory symptoms.

In Dubai's climate, hidden AC leaks are a primary culprit. The constant cooling creates significant condensation; if a drain line is blocked or a unit is misfitting, that moisture gets trapped behind walls or under floors, creating an ideal breeding ground for mould. The spores then circulate every time the AC fan runs.

You should arrange for a professional inspection. In a villa, the leak could be in the ductwork or the wall itself, and the visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg. A proper assessment will identify the full extent of the moisture source and contamination. Remediation is not just cleaning the visible spot—it requires fixing the AC leak at its source, then properly containing and removing the affected materials to prevent spores from spreading.

For immediate relief, keep the family out of that room and increase ventilation if possible, though that's challenging in summer. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can agitate the spores and make airborne particle levels worse. A company with a certified microbiologist on staff can provide the most science-driven approach to resolving the issue safely.
