Is black mold in shower an urgent health hazard?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold starting to grow in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been incredibly humid lately even with the AC running constantly. My main concern is how quickly this can become a bigger health hazard – is this something I need to call a professional to deal with immediately this weekend, or is it okay to wait and just clean it myself next week?

The urgency depends on the patch's size and your household's health. Small patches under one square foot are common in Dubai bathrooms due to high humidity and condensation from showers. For most healthy adults, this typically causes minor irritation like worsened allergies or congestion, not an immediate crisis.
However, immediate professional assessment is advised if the area is larger, if it returns quickly after cleaning, or if household members have asthma, respiratory issues, or weakened immune systems. The constant AC use can spread spores if the mold is in the ventilation system. You can clean a small patch yourself with a vinegar solution or specialized cleaner, ensuring you wear a mask and gloves. The critical step is addressing the moisture source—run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces. If the mold reappears within a week despite these measures, that indicates a persistent humidity problem requiring professional diagnosis to find the hidden moisture source and prevent it from becoming a larger issue. |
