Mold in Dubai closet: DIY or pro, and estimated cost?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and it feels damp. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai and I'm worried it's from a hidden leak or just the humidity. What’s the ballpark cost to get a professional mold remediation company to test and fix this, and is it a complete DIY nightmare or worth hiring someone?

Black spots in a closet in an older Bur Dubai building are a classic sign of mold, almost certainly fueled by the high humidity and potential for condensation from year-round AC use. The dampness suggests a possible hidden leak from plumbing or seepage, or it could be condensation from a cold wall meeting warm, humid air.

For a small, contained area (under 10 square feet), DIY is possible but comes with risks. You'd need to identify and fix the moisture source first—otherwise, it will return. Cleaning involves scrubbing with a detergent solution, not just bleach, which only removes the colour. Crucially, you must contain the area with plastic sheeting to prevent spores from spreading and wear proper PPE (N95 mask, gloves, goggles).

However, given the location in a closet (indicating possible wall cavity contamination) and the description of it "spreading," a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source hidden behind walls, which is nearly impossible to DIY accurately.

Costs are highly variable. A basic inspection and moisture assessment for a single room might start around AED 500-800. Remediation for a contained closet area, including source correction, containment, removal, and air scrubbing, could range from AED 2,000 to AED 4,500. Complex cases involving wall demolition and reconstruction will be higher. The value isn't just in removal; it's in the diagnostic testing to guarantee the moisture issue is resolved and the post-remediation verification to confirm the air and surface are clear. For peace of mind and a guaranteed solution, hiring a company with a microbiology lab for verification is the most reliable path.
