Black mold in bathroom: DIY fix or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the ceiling and in the corners of our master bathroom. It’s in the shower area, which doesn't have a window, and the smell is really musty. I tried wiping it with vinegar but it came back after a few days. Is this something I can fix myself with a stronger product, or is it time to call in a professional cleaning service here in Dubai?

Black mold in bathrooms is common in Dubai due to high humidity and poor ventilation, especially in windowless showers where condensation builds up from hot showers and year-round AC use. If vinegar didn't work and the smell is musty, the growth is likely established behind the surface.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt a stronger DIY treatment with a biocide cleaner labeled for mold, not just bleach. Ensure you wear gloves, a mask, and open the bathroom door with the exhaust fan running for at least an hour after cleaning. The key is to address the moisture source; run the exhaust fan during and for 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces.

If it returns quickly, covers a larger area, or the musty smell persists, the mold has likely penetrated the grout or drywall. In these cases, a professional assessment is needed to determine the extent and correct the humidity issue, as improper handling can spread spores. Dubai's climate makes effective moisture control essential for a permanent solution.
