Found black mold from AC leak; health risk for baby?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the wall for a couple of months and now I’ve just pulled back the corner of the carpet and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading up the wall behind it. I’m really worried about the health risks, especially for my baby who sleeps in the same room. What’s the absolute best way to deal with this in Dubai – should I call the building management or get a professional cleaning company myself?

Black mold from an AC leak in a nursery is a serious concern that requires immediate action. The UAE's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, and infants are particularly vulnerable to airborne spores that can irritate respiratory systems.

Stop using that AC unit immediately to prevent further moisture and spore circulation. You must address both the symptom and the source. Contact your building management first, as they are typically responsible for fixing the leak in the AC unit and its drainage line—this is the root cause. Simultaneously, you need a professional mold inspection for the affected area. The black fuzz indicates significant growth, likely extending behind the wall. In Dubai, proper remediation involves more than just wiping the surface; it requires containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth.

For a case involving a baby, a certified inspector with a microbiology lab can identify the mold species and provide a clearance test after remediation to confirm the air is safe. Do not attempt to clean this yourself with bleach, as disturbing it will aerosolize spores throughout the room. Your priority is to have the leak repaired by the building and the contaminated materials professionally handled to ensure your baby's environment is healthy.
