Is black mold causing our headaches and how to clean?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where our winter clothes are stored. It started after that period of heavy humidity last month. Lately, my wife and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses and headaches that go away once we leave for work. Could this mold be the cause of our symptoms, and what’s the safest way for us to clean it ourselves without making it worse?

The symptoms you describe—stuffy noses and headaches that improve when you leave the home—are strongly associated with exposure to mold, particularly in a humid climate like Dubai's. The persistent indoor humidity, often worsened by AC systems that can create condensation, provides an ideal environment for mold growth. While not all black-colored mold is the notorious "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), many types can produce irritants and allergens that cause these exact reactions.
For a small patch (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a detergent solution, not bleach, as bleach only removes the color and can worsen airborne spores. Thoroughly dry the area immediately using a fan. Discard any porous materials like cardboard boxes or damaged fabrics that the mold has penetrated. However, if the mold has grown into the wall itself (drywall, plaster) or returns after cleaning, the moisture source is still active and professional assessment is needed. Given that the mold is in a closet with stored fabrics, there is a high likelihood that spores have spread to your clothing. Simply cleaning the wall may not resolve the symptom trigger. For health concerns and to identify the exact species, a professional inspection and lab analysis of the mold is the most definitive course of action. This is especially prudent in the UAE, where underlying humidity issues often require a building science approach to solve permanently. |
