Is this wall mold dangerous and need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and we keep the AC running most of the time. We’re worried it might be affecting our health. How quickly do we need to deal with this mold, and is it a job for a professional or can we handle it ourselves?

Black speckles on an exterior wall with constant AC use are a classic sign of condensation-induced mold, very common in Dubai's climate. The immediate health risk is generally low for healthy adults but can cause persistent allergy-like symptoms—congestion, sneezing, or irritated eyes. For infants, elderly residents, or anyone with asthma, the risk of respiratory irritation is higher.
You should address this within the next few weeks. The priority is to stop the moisture source. The wall is likely cold from the AC, and Dubai's high external humidity is condensing on it behind the sofa, where air circulation is poor. Move the sofa away from the wall immediately to improve airflow. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, scrubbing visible mold often misses spores embedded in the porous wall material, leading to quick regrowth. Given its location on an exterior wall and the probability of hidden moisture, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters to find the exact condensation points and can determine if insulation issues are the root cause. Reputable remediators will also perform pre- and post-cleaning lab tests to verify the spore count has been returned to a safe, natural level, which is the only way to be certain it's truly resolved. |
