How to remove black mold from a humid closet wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of the master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and that wall is an exterior one. What's the most effective way to get rid of this myself, or should I call a professional company right away?

For a small patch (less than 1 square meter) on a non-porous surface like painted drywall, you can handle this yourself. The Dubai climate, with its high humidity and constant AC use, creates perfect conditions for mold on cold exterior walls where condensation forms.

First, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of 4 parts water to 1 part white vinegar or a diluted bleach cleaner (ensure good ventilation). Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. The key is not just cleaning but eliminating the moisture source. Use a dehumidifier or a rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier bag inside the closet, and leave a small gap between the wall and your stored items for air circulation.

However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or the area is larger, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is wise. They use moisture meters to find the exact source of dampness and can perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. For villas, this is often the most effective long-term solution to prevent recurrence.
