Black mold in closet: DIY clean or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page
|
We’ve lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It's been worse since the humidity really kicked in over the last month. I’m worried it’s spreading. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, or should I call my landlord immediately?

Black mold in a closet corner, especially in Jumeirah, is a common issue directly tied to Dubai's high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The wall is likely a cold surface where moisture condenses, creating the perfect environment for mold.
For a small area (under one square meter), a DIY clean is possible. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and can push spores deeper into porous surfaces like drywall. The key is to fix the moisture source. Ensure the AC is not set too cold, which increases condensation, and use a moisture absorber or dehumidifier in the closet. However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or keeps returning after cleaning, the problem is likely inside the wall cavity. In this case, you should call your landlord immediately. Under Dubai rental law (RERA), landlords are responsible for maintaining the property's structural integrity and addressing issues like dampness and water infiltration that lead to mold. Document the issue with photos and formally notify them in writing to start the process. For persistent or large-scale problems, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling can identify the exact mold species and moisture source, which is often necessary for an effective, permanent remediation. |
