Can small black mold in my closet wait a few weeks?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall facing the outside. It’s gotten a bit more noticeable since the heavy dew we had last week. My main worry is how quickly this can become a bigger problem – is this something I need to get treated immediately, or can it wait a couple of weeks until my schedule clears up?

That's a classic sign of moisture intrusion in Dubai, especially after high humidity. While a few small spots might not pose an immediate health threat to most adults, waiting is not advisable. The UAE's climate, particularly the combination of heat and high humidity, acts as an incubator for mold. What appears small can colonize deeper into the drywall or backing material within weeks, turning a simple surface clean into a larger remediation project.

Your description of the spot being on an exterior wall is a major red flag. It strongly suggests a condensation issue within the wall cavity or a minor leak, which won't resolve itself. The mold you see is likely just the visible portion of a larger problem. For a proper assessment, a professional inspection with a borescope can check inside the wall cavity for hidden growth without causing damage.

Immediate action: Wipe the visible spots with a solution of diluted white vinegar (1 part vinegar to 1 part water) and ensure the area is completely dry. This can temporarily suppress surface growth. Then, run a dehumidifier in the room and ensure the AC is functioning correctly to keep humidity levels below 60%, which is critical for slowing its spread. However, this is only a stopgap measure.

Schedule a professional assessment as soon as you are able, ideally within the next two weeks. They can identify the moisture source—whether it's internal condensation or an external leak—which is the only way to prevent it from returning after cleaning. In Dubai villas, this is a common issue that requires diagnosing the root cause to provide a lasting solution.
