Can I wait to treat mold on clothes in damp room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Mirdif for about 5 years, and I just pulled out some winter clothes from the guest room closet and found a bunch of black fuzzy spots on a couple of my jackets. The room always feels a bit damp and we barely use that AC. Given how humid it's been lately, is this something I need to deal with immediately or can it wait a few weeks until our schedule clears up?

Treating mold on clothes and addressing the source should not wait. In Dubai's high humidity, visible mold on porous materials like fabric indicates an active moisture problem that will only worsen, potentially spreading to walls and furniture.

For the clothes, wash them immediately with hot water (if fabric allows) and a mold-killing additive like white vinegar or borax. Sun-drying is highly effective. However, this only fixes the symptom. The root cause is the damp, underused room. An AC unit that runs infrequently creates a cold surface where humid air condenses, providing the perfect environment for mold. Running that AC consistently on a dry mode setting, even when the room is unoccupied, is crucial to control humidity.

Given the villa's age and the persistent damp feeling, a professional inspection is wise. They can identify hidden condensation points, assess the AC drain pan and ductwork for growth, and measure the room's humidity level. In many cases, improving ventilation and adjusting AC usage can resolve the issue, but a lab test can confirm the mold type and the appropriate remediation steps. Delaying risks more extensive and costly damage to your property and belongings.
