Is black mold in my Dubai hoem dangerous for my son?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black, fuzzy spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. My youngest son has been waking up with a stuffy nose and I'm really worried it's connected. How dangerous is this, and what's the fastest way to get it properly cleaned and treated here in Dubai?

Black mold in Dubai's climate can certainly be a health concern, especially for children. The combination of high humidity and constant AC use creates ideal conditions for mold growth on cold surfaces like external walls. The stuffy nose your son is experiencing is a common reaction to mold spores, as they are irritants that can worsen allergies and asthma.
In the UAE, the danger level depends on the extent of the infestation and the specific species, which only a lab test can confirm. For a small, visible patch, the risk is typically low but still warrants action. For anything larger than one square meter, or if it's inside the HVAC system, professional remediation is strongly advised to prevent spores from spreading throughout the home. The fastest way to address it is a two-step process. First, get a professional inspection with air and surface sampling. This identifies the species and spore count, confirming the actual risk level. Second, based on the results, proceed with remediation. For a small area, this may involve cleaning with specific antimicrobial agents and fixing the moisture source—often inadequate insulation on the external wall. For larger issues, a certified remediation company will contain the area, use HEPA filtration, and remove contaminated materials. The key is not just cleaning the visible mold but solving the underlying condensation problem to prevent its return. |
