Is black mold causing my kids' cough and how to treat?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe. We've lived in this Marina apartment for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to clean. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch. What’s the best way to treat this myself to stop it from coming back, and should I be worried about the AC unit being the cause?

Black mold exposure can definitely cause or worsen respiratory symptoms like coughing, especially in children. The damp wall behind the wardrobe is a clear sign of a moisture problem, which is the primary cause.

For a small patch (less than 1 square meter), you can clean it yourself with a vinegar or diluted hydrogen peroxide solution, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, the dampness suggests an underlying issue that will cause it to return. In Dubai's humid climate, this is often due to condensation from poorly insulated external walls (common in Marina apartments) or a leak from pipes or the AC drain line. Wiping the wall dry is only a temporary fix.

The AC unit could be a contributing factor if its drain line is clogged or if the condensate pump is faulty, causing excess humidity. It's less likely the AC is blowing the mold spores directly unless there is growth inside the unit or ductwork, which requires a separate inspection.

For a recurring or larger problem, a professional assessment is recommended to identify the exact moisture source. They can use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the origin. Remediation involves fixing the leak or addressing the condensation, then properly removing the contaminated materials. Saniservice's microbiology lab can identify the mold species to confirm the health risk, which is a standard step in a professional inspection.
