Should I get black mold by my kids' AC vent inspected?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I just found what looks like a small patch of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, near the AC vent. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried the humidity is making it worse. Is this something I need to get professionally inspected immediately, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

The black mold near your kids' AC vent warrants a professional inspection. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold, especially in closets and behind walls where condensation can build up unseen. A small visible patch often indicates a larger, hidden moisture problem.

While you can clean a small, surface-level patch with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), this only addresses what you can see. The underlying cause—likely excess moisture from the AC unit's condensate drain or poor insulation—will remain, allowing regrowth. For children experiencing persistent coughing, identifying the specific mold type is crucial, as some species can exacerbate respiratory issues.

A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the moisture source and air sampling to identify the mold species. This is vital for determining the right remediation strategy, not just a surface clean. Reputable companies in Dubai should provide a detailed report with lab results from an accredited microbiology lab, which is the only way to know the actual health risk and if your HVAC system is spreading spores. Given your children's symptoms and the location, an inspection is the safest course of action.
