How to remove mold from humid Dubai apartment wall?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It’s been incredibly humid lately and that wall always feels cold. I’m really worried about our health and the damage to the apartment. What’s the most effective way to handle mold removal here in Dubai, and should I hire a professional company or is it something I can tackle myself with products from ACE?

Black mould behind a wardrobe on a cold wall is a classic sign of condensation due to high humidity and poor air circulation, a very common issue in Dubai. The most effective approach is a combination of removing the existing growth, correcting the moisture source, and preventing its return.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt cleaning yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover from a hardware store. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. However, simply cleaning the surface is a temporary fix if the underlying cause isn't addressed. The wall needs to be completely dry.

The permanent solution requires improving ventilation and reducing humidity. Move the wardrobe slightly away from the wall to allow air to circulate. Use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid months. Ensure your AC is running efficiently and set to a consistent, cool temperature to reduce condensation on cold surfaces.

For any persistent or large-scale infestation (covering over 1m²), or if the mould returns quickly, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness within the wall and identify if there's a more serious leak. Remediation involves specialised equipment like HEPA vacuums and air scrubbers to properly contain and remove spores, followed by antimicrobial coating to inhibit regrowth. A certified company can also provide lab analysis to identify the mould type, which is crucial for assessing health risks and verifying the cleanup was successful.
