Is our AC mold causing serious health issues?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom in our Jumeirah apartment seems to be blowing out a faint damp smell, and for the last couple of weeks, both my husband and I have been waking up with sore throats and stuffy noses. I just pulled out the vent cover and the inside is covered in black and greenish fuzzy patches. Is this the kind of mold that can cause serious health issues, or are our symptoms likely to go away if we just get the unit cleaned professionally?

Black and green fuzzy patches in your AC unit are a clear sign of microbial growth, which is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant condensation in AC systems. The symptoms you're describing—sore throats and stuffy noses upon waking—are classic reactions to inhaling mold spores and microbial fragments from a contaminated unit.

While many common AC molds like Cladosporium primarily cause allergic reactions and irritation, the specific type matters greatly for assessing health risk. Some species, like Aspergillus, can produce more significant health effects, especially for individuals with asthma, compromised immune systems, or chronic respiratory conditions. Your symptoms are a direct indicator that the environment is affecting your health, and they are unlikely to resolve until the source is properly addressed.

A standard cleaning might remove visible growth but often misses the root contamination within the ductwork and cooling coils. For a situation where health symptoms are already present, a professional inspection that includes air and surface sampling is recommended. This lab analysis identifies the species present and the concentration of spores in your air, providing a clear picture of the actual risk and the necessary scope of remediation, which is required to be a thorough process under Dubai Municipality guidelines. Simply wiping the visible dust away is insufficient.
