How to prevent mold from high humidity in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be constantly damp around the vents, and I keep finding small black spots on the back of my wardrobe, even after wiping them away. We've lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah Village Circle and this only started after the really humid weather kicked in a few months ago. I’m worried it’s going to damage our furniture and clothes. Besides just cleaning the visible mold, what’s the most effective long-term solution to control the humidity and prevent this from coming back every summer?

The most effective long-term solution is to control indoor humidity levels, as the visible mold is a symptom of excess moisture. Dubai's high outdoor humidity, especially in summer, combines with cold AC surfaces to create condensation—the primary cause of your recurring problem.

First, ensure your AC unit is correctly sized and functioning efficiently. An oversized unit cools the air too quickly without adequately removing humidity, while an undersized one runs constantly. Both can leave excess moisture in your air. Set your AC to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to minimize drastic temperature swings that cause condensation on vents and walls.

Improving ventilation is critical. Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms for at least 30 minutes after cooking or showering. For severe dampness, a standalone dehumidifier can help maintain humidity below 60%, the level where mold struggles to grow. For wardrobe concerns, avoid overpacking clothes and consider moisture-absorbing products like silica gel packs to improve air circulation.

For persistent issues, a professional inspection is advised to identify hidden moisture sources, such as minor leaks in the AC drip pan or insufficient insulation around cooling ducts. Remediation involves not just cleaning visible spots with appropriate fungicides, but also addressing the root moisture problem. In many cases, a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the environment is truly mold-free.
