How to clean mold from AC closet and stop spread?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom closet seems to be leaking again, and I just pulled out a bag to find black, fuzzy mold all over the back wall and on several of my shoes. The musty smell is really strong in there now. It must have been slowly growing for a while but I only spotted it today. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about it spreading through the AC vents?

Stop the AC unit immediately to prevent spores from circulating. The strong musty smell indicates active growth, and in Dubai's climate, this can spread quickly through condensation in ductwork.

For a small area (under 1 square meter), a DIY approach may work. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water. Scrub the visible mold off non-porous surfaces like the wall and AC unit casing with a stiff brush. For porous items like shoes, a thorough cleaning may not be possible; discard heavily affected ones. After scrubbing, wipe the area with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not kill the roots on porous materials.

However, since the mold is inside a closet with an AC unit and the smell is strong, the leak has likely created hidden moisture and growth within the wall cavity or AC drip pan. This is a common issue here due to high humidity and constant AC use. DIY cleaning often addresses only the surface, missing the root cause.

You should be concerned about spread through the AC vents. Once the unit is turned back on, it can distribute spores. A professional inspection is recommended to identify the source of the leak, assess the full extent of the hidden damage inside the wall and unit, and perform containment procedures to prevent cross-contamination during remediation. For verifiable results, the process should include before-and-after testing by a certified microbiology lab to confirm the environment is safe.
