How to properly inspect and fix bedroom closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Mirdif for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the outer wall. I’m worried the humidity is getting trapped in there, especially after running the AC all day. What’s the most effective way to get a proper inspection to find the source of the moisture and make sure it doesn't come back after cleaning?

Mold in a bedroom closet on an outer wall is a classic sign of trapped humidity and condensation, very common in Dubai villas. The temperature difference between the AC-cooled room and the hot exterior wall causes moisture to form, which then gets absorbed by stored items and drywall.
For a proper inspection, start with a thorough visual check. Remove everything from the closet and look for visible water stains, peeling paint, or crumbling drywall. A musty odor is a strong indicator even if visible mold is small. The source is often a small leak from a pipe within the wall or, more commonly, persistent condensation due to the lack of air circulation behind stored items. While a DIY test kit can confirm mold presence, it won't identify the moisture source or species. For a recurring or large patch (over 1 square meter), a professional inspection is advised. They use tools like moisture meters to quantify dampness in the wall and borescopes to look inside cavities for hidden leaks or insulation issues. A lab analysis of the mold sample is the only way to definitively identify the species, which dictates the appropriate remediation protocol. To fix it, first address the moisture source. Improve air circulation by not overpacking the closet and occasionally leaving the door ajar. For condensation-prone exterior walls, a dehumidifier can help significantly. Cleaning small patches (less than 1m²) with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution may suffice, but always wear an N95 mask and gloves. For larger infestations or if the mold returns after cleaning, professional remediation is necessary to remove contaminated materials and apply antimicrobial coatings to prevent regrowth. The goal is to control the humidity, as simply wiping the surface will only provide a temporary solution. |
