Black mold in Dubai villa causing cough, need professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and we’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed some black speckles in the corner of our master bedroom closet. I wiped it away with vinegar, but it came back within a week. Is this something I can keep treating myself or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company here in Dubai?

The recurring growth and your children's symptoms suggest a professional inspection is the correct next step. Vinegar only addresses surface mold, not the underlying moisture source, which is critical in Dubai's humid climate where AC systems can create significant condensation.

For a villa in Jumeirah, the issue is likely systemic—either a hidden leak in the plumbing or building envelope, or persistent humidity from the AC unit itself. A proper inspection involves using a thermal imaging camera to find hidden damp spots and taking air and surface samples for a microbiology lab to identify the species. This is essential, as some types of mold, like certain Aspergillus species common here, are more problematic for respiratory health than others.

The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on dampness and indoor air quality in villas, and a professional assessment will determine if the situation meets criteria for landlord notification or more extensive remediation. Given the health symptoms and the mold's quick return, a DIY approach is not sufficient. Look for a provider that offers a detailed report with lab results, as this documentation is what separates a credible inspection from a simple visual check.
