AC mold cleanup DIY or professional in Jumeirah?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our bedroom in Jumeirah has been leaking a bit and now there's black speckled mold on the wall behind the wardrobe. We only noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room last weekend. I’m worried about it spreading but not sure if it’s a big enough job to call a professional. Can this kind of mold cleanup be a DIY project with bleach, or is it better to get a specialist?

That black speckling behind your wardrobe is a classic sign of a chronic AC condensate leak, a very common issue in Jumeirah due to our high humidity. Whether it's a DIY job depends entirely on the extent.

For a small patch (under 1 square foot/0.1 sqm), you can attempt cleaning with a detergent solution, not bleach. Bleach fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces and only bleaches the surface without killing the root structure. However, moving the wardrobe revealed it; the real concern is the hidden mold inside the wall cavity and potentially within the AC unit itself, which DIY cannot address.

Given the leak and the location, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Dubai's climate means any residual moisture will cause regrowth quickly. A proper remediation involves identifying the AC leak source, removing affected porous materials like drywall, and using HEPA filtration to contain spores. Companies with a microbiology lab, like ours, can also test to identify the mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. This ensures the problem is solved at its source, not just the visible stain.
