Mold on wardrobe wall: DIY or call professionals?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots appearing on the back of our bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the outside. It's been worse since the humidity spiked last week and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose every morning. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and vinegar or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies in Dubai?

Black mould on an exterior-facing wall during a Dubai humidity spike is a common and serious health concern that typically requires professional assessment. The combination of high outdoor humidity and cold air from your AC unit creates significant condensation inside that wall cavity, providing the perfect environment for mould growth. Your husband's stuffy nose is a strong indicator that the spores are already affecting indoor air quality.

While small surface mould on non-porous tiles can sometimes be managed with diluted vinegar, attempting a DIY fix on a porous drywall or plaster surface is not advisable. Bleach is ineffective as it only bleaches the colour and does not kill the roots, while vinegar only addresses surface spores. The real problem is the moisture trapped within the wall, which you cannot address without proper equipment.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is warranted to determine the moisture source and extent of growth behind the wardrobe. Reputable companies use thermal imaging and borescopes to see inside walls without destructive probing. Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for remediation to ensure mould is contained and removed safely, preventing spores from spreading to other parts of your home during the process.

Given the climate, the long-term solution requires fixing the condensation issue, which may involve improving wall insulation or adjusting AC settings to reduce the temperature differential. After remediation, a post-verification test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm the air quality is safe. For health symptoms and structural mould, a professional approach is the most reliable path.
