Is AC mold causing our morning sickness and sore throats?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our bedroom in Jumeirah has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I’ve spotted this black, fuzzy stuff growing around the vent on the wall. Lately, my husband and I have been waking up with really stuffy heads and sore throats that clear up after we leave for work. Is this black mold, and could it be making us sick from the AC blowing it into the room all night?

Based on your description, yes, the black growth around your leaking AC vent is very likely mold, and it is almost certainly the cause of your morning symptoms. The constant moisture from the leak, combined with Dubai's high humidity and the dust that accumulates in ducts, creates an ideal environment for mold. The AC then blows these spores directly into your bedroom air all night, which you and your husband are breathing in for hours.

The symptoms you describe—waking up with congestion, sore throats, and headaches that improve when you leave the environment—are classic signs of mold exposure. It's your body's inflammatory response to the spores.

In Dubai's climate, where AC runs year-round, a small leak can lead to a significant mold problem quickly. For your health and to prevent further damage to the property, this needs immediate attention. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as improper disinfection can aerosolize more spores.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the exact moisture source (often a clogged condensate drain line) and assess the full extent of the growth, which is often worse inside the unit and ductwork. In the UAE, remediation companies should follow strict DHA and DM guidelines. A proper fix involves stopping the leak, physically removing the contaminated materials, and using specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments to clean the area, not just spraying a chemical. Verifying the work with before-and-after lab testing is the best way to ensure the problem is truly resolved.
