Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY clean or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, fuzzy patches spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's the wall facing the outside, and with all the humidity lately, I'm worried it's gotten out of hand. What's the best way to handle this—should I call building maintenance first, or try to clean it myself with something from the supermarket?

This is a common issue in Dubai, especially on exterior walls during humid periods. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold surface where warm, humid air condenses, creating the perfect environment for mold.
For your safety, do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the patches will release a high concentration of spores into your bedroom air, which can cause significant respiratory irritation. Supermarket bleach or vinegar only removes surface discoloration and does not address the moisture source or the hyphae (roots) growing within the wall. Your first call should be to your building’s facility management. They are responsible for investigating and resolving the underlying cause, which is likely insufficient exterior wall insulation or a hidden leak. They must fix the moisture intrusion; otherwise, the mold will return regardless of cleaning. Once maintenance addresses the cause, the affected area needs proper remediation. This involves isolating the space, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and applying specialized antimicrobial solutions. For a case of this visible spread, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent and recommend the correct remediation protocol, as improper handling can worsen the problem. |
