How to remove and prevent black mold on bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. I think it’s from all the humidity we’ve had the past month. I’m worried about it affecting our health. What’s the most effective way to get rid of it and stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold on walls is common here due to Dubai's high humidity, especially when airflow is restricted behind furniture. The most effective approach is to address both the visible growth and the underlying moisture source.
For a small patch (under 1 square meter), you can clean it yourself with a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area and let it dry completely. However, simply cleaning the surface often fails because the mold's root system (mycelium) can penetrate porous materials like drywall and paint. For a recurring problem or larger area, professional assessment is strongly recommended to determine the extent and identify the exact moisture source, which could be condensation from your AC, a small leak, or humidity migrating from your en-suite bathroom. To prevent it from returning, you must control humidity and improve airflow. Move the wardrobe at least 2-3 inches away from the wall to allow air circulation. Use a dehumidifier in the room, aiming to keep relative humidity below 60%. Ensure your AC is serviced regularly and set to a consistent temperature to minimize condensation. If the wall is consistently cold to the touch, it may be a thermal bridge; insulating that specific wall can be a permanent solution. A professional inspection can pinpoint these issues and verify remediation success through post-clearance testing. |
