DIY fix or professional for Mirdif AC mold on ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Mirdif has been leaking a bit and now we've got a patch of black mold on the ceiling corner of our master bedroom, right above the wardrobe. It's been getting bigger over the last couple of weeks, and I'm worried about it spreading. I'm trying to figure out if this is a simple DIY fix with bleach or if I absolutely need to call a professional, and roughly how much that might cost here in Dubai.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended for mold resulting from an AC leak, especially in Mirdif's climate. The visible patch is the fruiting body; the actual fungal network is likely more extensive inside the ceiling and wall cavity. Simply wiping the surface with bleach is ineffective and can release a large number of spores, worsening the problem.
The primary concern is the ongoing moisture source. A technician must first identify and repair the AC condensate drain line or unit leak causing the water intrusion. Until that is fixed, the mold will return. The high humidity year-round in Dubai provides the perfect environment for rapid regrowth. For a proper remediation, the affected section of gypsum board ceiling should be carefully removed and disposed of, the underlying structure cleaned with specialized antimicrobial agents, and the area dried with industrial air movers and dehumidifiers. This process contains the spores and prevents them from spreading to other areas of your villa, like the wardrobe contents below. As a science-driven company with our own lab, we find that what appears to be a small issue often requires targeted remediation to prevent recurrence and protect indoor air quality, particularly in bedrooms. The cost for a professional job is justified by the permanent resolution of the moisture issue and the proper containment and removal of the mold colony. |
