How to treat and prevent AC mold in humid apartment?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet in the corner, and now I'm seeing a small black spot there that won't come out. It's right behind the curtain, so we didn't notice it for a while, and I'm worried it's spreading. We keep the AC on most of the day, but the humidity is still so high in our Jumeirah apartment. What's the most effective way to treat this existing mold and stop the AC from causing it again?

Stop the AC leak first—this is critical. For the existing mold on the carpet, a small spot can often be treated with a solution of white vinegar or a specialized mold remover. However, if the staining is deep or the affected area is larger than a square foot, the carpet padding underneath is likely compromised and the section should be professionally removed to prevent spores from spreading.

To prevent recurrence, the AC unit must be serviced. The drain line is most likely clogged, which is a common issue in Dubai's dusty climate. Have a technician clear the condensate drain line and check the drip pan. To manage the high humidity, ensure your AC is set to a temperature that effectively removes moisture from the air; 22-24°C is often recommended. Using a standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during more humid months, can significantly help.

For a persistent issue, a professional inspection can identify the mold species and the full extent of the problem, which is often not visible. We operate a local microbiology lab to provide this specific analysis, as the type of mold determines the appropriate remediation protocol.
