How to permanently remove black mold from wardrobe wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Mirdif for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the back of the bedroom wardrobe on the outside wall. I wiped it away but it came back in less than a week, even though we run the AC constantly. What's the best way to treat this for good and stop it from coming back, especially with the humidity?

The mold in your wardrobe is a classic Dubai issue caused by thermal bridging. The outside wall gets extremely hot, while your AC cools the inside, creating a cold surface where moisture from the humid air condenses. This constant dampness, trapped in the enclosed space, is the perfect environment for mold. Simply wiping it away doesn't address this underlying moisture source.
For a permanent solution, start by identifying and eliminating the moisture. Move everything out of the wardrobe and inspect the wall for any cracks or leaks. Clean the surface thoroughly with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, not just bleach, which only removes the surface color. After cleaning, the wall must be completely dry. Use a dehumidifier or fan in the room for at least 24-48 hours to ensure all moisture is gone before repainting. The critical step is to insulate the cold wall to prevent future condensation. Apply an anti-condensation or thermal insulation paint as a primer. For severe or recurring cases, a professional assessment is recommended to check for hidden interstitial condensation within the wall cavity itself, which is common in villas. They can use thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact cold spots. Finally, ensure your AC is serviced and draining correctly, as high indoor humidity from a faulty unit will exacerbate the problem. Improving air circulation around the wardrobe by not overpacking it can also help. |
