How to clean AC mold and who to fix it?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little bit, and now I'm starting to see black spots forming on the wall and on some of my shoes stored in there. It’s been humid the last few weeks and the problem seems to be getting worse. What’s the best way to clean this up myself and who should I call to fix the AC unit to stop the moisture for good?

The black spots are likely mold, a common issue here with high humidity and AC condensation. For a small area (under 1 square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected wall and hard surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a detergent like Dettol, then dry the area completely. For porous items like shoes, a thorough cleaning may not be sufficient if mold has penetrated deeply.

However, cleaning only addresses the visible growth, not the moisture source. The AC leak must be fixed to prevent immediate recurrence. The unit likely has a clogged condensate drain line or a faulty drain pan, which is a common repair for licensed HVAC technicians. You should call a reputable HVAC company to diagnose and repair the leak permanently.

Given the humid climate, this situation can escalate quickly. If the mold covers a larger area, has a musty odor, or if occupants experience respiratory issues, a professional mold inspection is recommended. An assessment from a company with a microbiology lab can identify the species and provide a protocol for proper remediation, ensuring the hidden moisture and mold behind walls are addressed. This is crucial for preventing health risks and structural damage in Dubai's environment.
