Shoudl we remove bedroom mold ourselves or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's gotten worse since the humidity spiked last week. I’m worried it’s affecting our health as my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. What’s the best way to handle this ourselves, and when should we call the building management?

That black patch in your closet is a classic sign of condensation, especially on interior walls where cool air from the room meets the warm, humid air trapped inside. Dubai's high humidity, particularly now, provides the perfect environment for this.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. The key is to fix the moisture source. Ensure the closet isn't overcrowded and that air can circulate; leaving the door ajar can help. A small desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet can also control moisture effectively.

However, since it's on an interior wall and has worsened with humidity, the issue might be more systemic, possibly from a hidden leak in the plumbing or building envelope. If the mold returns after cleaning or covers a larger area, it's time to call building management. Under Dubai Municipality regulations, they are responsible for the structural integrity of the building and investigating potential leaks from common areas or within the walls. Given your husband's symptoms, a professional inspection to identify the species and extent is wise to ensure the remediation is done correctly and your indoor air quality is restored.
