How to safely remove black mold in humid Dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and it's been really humid lately. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or should we call a professional company here in Dubai right away?

Black mold in a Dubai closet is a common issue due to high humidity and condensation forming on cooler exterior walls. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can handle it yourself with precautions. First, identify and fix the moisture source—this is critical. For a closet on an exterior wall, condensation is the likely culprit; improving air circulation in the room with a fan or a small dehumidifier can help.

Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and gloves. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the gap with tape. Lightly mist the mold with water to prevent spores from becoming airborne, then scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't address the root cause and can damage surfaces. Allow the area to dry completely.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has returned after previous cleaning, or if anyone in the household has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. In Dubai's climate, hidden mold within walls is a real possibility if condensation is ongoing. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to assess the full extent and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type. This data-driven approach ensures the remediation plan is effective and prevents recurrence, which is essential in our high-humidity environment.
