Can I clean mold in my Dubai villa closet myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
My master bedroom closet in our villa in Jumeirah has started smelling really damp, and I just found a bunch of black spots on the back wall and on a few of my leather bags. It's been worse since the humidity spiked last week. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I need to call one of those professional mold removal companies here?

That black spot pattern in a Jumeirah villa closet is a classic sign of condensation mould, made worse by our high humidity. You can attempt a DIY clean if the area is small (under 1 square meter) and the mould is surface-level on a non-porous surface.
For a small area, use a diluted white vinegar solution or a specialized mould cleaner, not bleach. Bleach only removes the surface colour and can worsen the problem by adding moisture; it also fails to address the root cause. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. However, for leather bags and a wall showing significant growth, professional assessment is strongly advised. The mould on your leather is likely feeding on the organic material, and improper cleaning can ruin them. More critically, visible mould on the wall often indicates a larger hidden problem within the partition, possibly from a small plumbing leak or severe condensation from the AC cold wall meeting humid air. In Dubai's climate, simply wiping the surface rarely solves the underlying moisture issue. A professional inspection identifies the species and the source of moisture—whether it's a leak, rising damp, or condensation from AC ducts. Remediation then focuses on fixing that source and properly removing the contamination. For valuables like leather goods, a specialist can advise on salvageability and proper cleaning techniques to prevent permanent damage. |
