Is AC mold making my toddler and me sick?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for the last few weeks and now I’m seeing these black, fuzzy patches spreading on the wall behind the curtain. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy head, itchy eyes, and a cough that just won’t go away, which makes me really nervous for my toddler who sleeps in the same room. Is this definitely black mold and how urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned versus trying to handle it myself?

The symptoms you and your toddler are experiencing—stuffy head, itchy eyes, and a persistent cough—are classic signs of mold exposure and are very likely connected to the leak from your AC unit. The UAE's high humidity, combined with condensation from a leaking AC, creates a perfect environment for mold to grow rapidly on walls and within the unit itself.

While the term "black mold" is often used generally, the specific type matters for health risks. Stachybotrys chartarum, the most concerning type, is less common but can produce mycotoxins. However, many other black-colored molds (like Cladosporium or Aspergillus) are common in AC systems and can still cause significant allergic reactions and respiratory irritation, especially in young children.

This situation is urgent and not a DIY project. Disturbing the mold by cleaning it yourself can aerosolize spores, significantly increasing your exposure and spreading the problem. The wall likely has moisture damage behind the surface that needs proper assessment.

You need a professional inspection. A certified inspector will identify the mold species through lab analysis to determine the actual risk level and locate the full extent of the contamination, which is often hidden inside the wall or AC unit. They will also find and fix the root cause of the moisture—often a clogged drain line or faulty installation—to prevent immediate recurrence. For a toddler sleeping in the room, verifying the environment is safe is critical. In Dubai, this level of diagnostic work is the standard for resolving health-related mold issues effectively.
