AC leak caused mold in closet; dangerous for my toddler?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom closet has been leaking a little for the past month, and now I’m seeing black spots on the back wall and on some of our shoes. My toddler has been waking up with a stuffy nose and I’m really worried it’s spreading spores into the air. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, or should I just call a professional company straight away?

That black growth is likely active mold, and the toddler's stuffy nose is a common symptom of exposure. The leak has created a constant moisture source, which is all mold needs to thrive in Dubai's climate.

For a situation involving a persistent leak, visible growth on porous materials like drywall and shoes, and a health symptom in a vulnerable person, professional remediation is strongly advised. The priority is to fix the AC leak permanently first; cleaning is ineffective until the moisture source is stopped.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself with bleach or store-bought sprays. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize a high concentration of spores into your bedroom air, potentially worsening your toddler's reaction. Professional teams use HEPA containment, negative air pressure, and antimicrobial treatments to safely remove the biomass and spores.

In Dubai, reputable remediators should provide a post-clean verification test from an independent lab to confirm spore counts have returned to normal indoor levels. This is the only way to be certain the environment is safe for your child. For now, keep the closet closed and consider moving your toddler to another room until the issue is resolved.
