Can I clean my AC's black mold myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom in Jumeirah has been making us cough and wake up with stuffy noses for a couple of months now. I finally pulled the vent cover off and the inside is covered in this black, powdery dust that I’m terrified is mold. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional for an inspection?

Cleaning visible black mold in your AC with bleach is not recommended and can be counterproductive. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like duct linings, and its high water content can actually feed future mold growth. In Dubai's humid climate, the underlying moisture problem causing the mold will remain, leading to a quick recurrence.

For a minor surface dusting on a removable plastic vent cover, a soapy water solution is sufficient. However, based on your symptoms—coughing and stuffy noses—and the visible black, powdery growth inside the unit, a professional inspection is strongly advised. This type of mold, often Aspergillus or Cladosporium here, releases spores directly into your breathing air while you sleep. A proper inspection identifies the species and the root cause, which is typically condensation from a clogged drain line, low refrigerant, or inadequate insulation, all common in our year-round AC use.

DIY attempts often disturb the colony, spreading spores throughout the room. A certified inspector will use containment procedures, HEPA vacuums, and EPA-approved biocides. They can also measure humidity levels at the coil and verify the drain pan is functioning, which is critical for a permanent solution. For verifiable results, ensure the company provides before-and-after lab testing to confirm the air quality is safe.
