Is AC mold causing our illness and can I clean it?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit for the last couple of months, and now I’ve spotted black, fuzzy patches in the corner of our bedroom where the unit is. My husband and I have both had a persistent cough and headaches that just won’t go away. How dangerous is this, and can I clean it myself or do I absolutely need to call a professional company?

The black patches and your symptoms are strong indicators of a mold-related issue, particularly given the AC leak and Dubai's high humidity. The persistent moisture creates an ideal environment for microbial growth. While not all black mold is the notorious Staphybotrys, its presence, combined with your cough and headaches, suggests the indoor air quality is compromised and likely irritating your respiratory systems.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than 10 sq. ft.), you can carefully clean it with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar. However, given the leak is from the AC unit itself, the contamination is almost certainly inside the system, spreading spores throughout your apartment every time it runs. DIY cleaning of the visible spot won't address the root cause or the contamination within the ductwork and cooling coils.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the source of the leak, assess the full extent of the contamination inside the AC, and perform air or surface sampling to identify the mold species. This is critical for determining the appropriate remediation strategy, as different types require different protocols. The Dubai climate, with year-round AC use and condensation issues, makes professional assessment the most reliable path to resolving the problem and your symptoms.
