Is black mold in my son's bedroom dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Mirdif villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall in our youngest son's bedroom. He's been having a stuffy nose and a weird cough for the past month that just won't go away, and I'm starting to panic that it's connected. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch, especially early in the morning. How dangerous is this type of mold and what's the first thing I should do to get it professionally tested?

Black mold, especially in a child's bedroom, is a legitimate health concern that warrants immediate attention. The damp wall and your son's persistent respiratory symptoms are likely connected. In Dubai's climate, this is often caused by thermal bridging, where the cold from the AC unit in the wall meets the outside heat, creating constant condensation inside the wall cavity.

The first step is to get a professional inspection and lab test to identify the species. Not all black-colored mold is the notorious Stachybotrys, but many types can cause the symptoms you describe—irritation, coughing, and congestion, particularly in children. A certified inspector will use a moisture meter to pinpoint the water source and take an air or surface sample for analysis at an accredited microbiology lab. This is critical; the lab report will tell you exactly what you're dealing with and the associated risk level.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can agitate the spores and worsen airborne contamination. For the safety of your family, especially your son, limit his time in that room until a professional assessment is complete. The remediation process itself involves containing the area, removing the contaminated materials like drywall or insulation, and addressing the underlying moisture issue to prevent it from returning, which is a common challenge in villas here.
