Black mold in closet from leak or Dubai humidity?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the back wall of our master bedroom closet. It's worse on the side that faces the outer wall, and the room has felt really damp lately even with the AC on. Could this be from a hidden leak in the building, or is it just the humidity getting trapped in there? What’s the best way to get this tested and treated properly in Dubai?

This is a very common issue in Dubai, particularly in closets on exterior walls. The pattern you describe—worse on the outer wall side and persistent dampness—strongly suggests condensation due to thermal bridging. The cold outer wall meets the warm, humid indoor air, creating a perfect environment for mold, even with the AC running. A slow, hidden leak from a pipe in the wall cavity is also a distinct possibility.
You should first rule out a leak. Check if the wall feels consistently damp or if the spotting worsens after water usage. For true identification and to understand the moisture source, a professional inspection with a thermal imaging camera and a moisture meter is the most reliable step. They can pinpoint condensation hotspots or hidden water intrusion. Do not attempt to clean significant growth yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and only bleaches the surface. The underlying moisture problem must be solved first. For proper treatment, the area needs to be contained, the mold physically removed by a certified technician, and the root cause—be it inadequate insulation, a leak, or excessive humidity—must be addressed to prevent immediate regrowth. For verification, a lab test can identify the species, which is particularly important for black-colored mold to assess potential health risks, especially for households with allergies or respiratory sensitivities. |
