Is urgent professional mold remediation needed for wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with this crazy humidity lately, it seems to be getting a bit bigger. I'm worried it's a bigger problem inside the wall. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with a spray from the supermarket?

Professional remediation is likely needed. Black mold on an exterior wall that's growing indicates a moisture problem inside the wall cavity, which a surface cleaner cannot fix. The high humidity in Dubai provides a constant source of moisture, often from condensation forming on the cold inner surface of an exterior wall due to your AC.
You should get a professional inspection. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to locate the source of the dampness inside the wall, which is critical. Simply spraying the visible patch will not address the hidden mold or the root cause. For a proper remediation, the wall may need to be opened, the source of moisture resolved, and the affected materials properly removed. For small surface areas (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it with a diluted vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, but this is only a temporary measure if the underlying moisture remains. Given its location and progression, a professional assessment is the most prudent course to prevent structural damage and potential health issues from prolonged exposure. |
