AC mold making me sick: DIY fix or call management?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little for a couple of months, but I just pulled back the corner of the carpet and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold underneath. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy head and a sore throat for weeks and I’m starting to worry it’s connected. What’s the fastest and safest way to handle this myself, or should I just call my building management immediately?

The symptoms you describe are consistent with exposure to damp environments and mold. In Dubai's climate, AC condensation leaks are a primary cause of hidden mold growth, and the resulting high humidity under materials like carpet creates an ideal breeding ground.

For a small patch (under 1 square meter), a careful DIY approach is possible. First, report the AC leak to building management immediately—this is the source and their responsibility to fix. For the mold, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Isolate the area, then mist the mold with a dilute vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution to suppress spores before wiping it up. Dispose of any contaminated materials in a sealed bag. However, if the carpet backing or underlay is wet and moldy, it is almost impossible to clean thoroughly and should be professionally removed.

Given the leak has persisted for months, the moisture has likely spread beyond what's visible. The fastest and safest way to confirm the extent is a professional inspection, which can identify hidden moisture in walls or subflooring with thermal imaging. DIY fixes often miss the root cause, leading to rapid regrowth. For documented cases impacting health, companies with their own microbiology lab can provide air and surface sampling to identify the specific mold type and confirm the environment is safe after remediation.
