Black fuzzy patch in closet: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling in our master bedroom closet has this black, fuzzy patch that seems to be spreading. We first spotted it about a week after that heavy dew last month, and now our clothes are starting to smell a bit damp. We've lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this happening. Is this something I need to call a professional for immediately, or are there specific cleaning products I can try first to remove it myself?

That black fuzzy patch is almost certainly active mold growth, and the damp smell on your clothes confirms it's a humidity issue. Given Dubai's high humidity and the recent heavy dew, this is a classic case of condensation forming on a cold surface—likely a section of the concrete slab above your closet that isn't properly insulated—creating a perfect environment for mold.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt to clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, scrubbing the visible growth is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture source isn't addressed. The mold will almost certainly return.

In a villa of that age in Jumeirah, this strongly indicates a persistent condensation problem or a potential, hidden leak from an AC condensation line or pipe chase. The fact it's spreading and affecting contents means the relative humidity in that enclosed space is consistently high.

You should call a professional for an inspection. They will use a moisture meter to find the exact source of the water—whether it's condensation due to a thermal bridge or a leak. Simply cleaning it without solving the moisture problem is ineffective. A proper remediation will involve identifying and insulating the cold spot, removing the contaminated materials, and using air scrubbers to remove spores from the air, which is why your clothes smell. For a confirmed and recurring issue like this, a DIY approach often wastes time and allows the problem to worsen.
