Best permanent fix for bathroom humidity causing closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the back of the master bedroom closet, which shares a wall with the ensuite bathroom. I'm worried the humidity from our showers is seeping through, especially during the summer. Besides cleaning it, what's the best permanent fix to prevent this from coming back—should I install a dehumidifier, an exhaust fan in the closet, or is there a specific type of paint I should use on that wall?

The most effective fix involves addressing the root cause: the moisture transfer from your bathroom. An exhaust fan is the primary solution. Dubai Municipality building codes require bathrooms to have them for this exact reason. Ensure yours is properly sized, vented directly outside (not into the attic), and that you run it for at least 20-30 minutes after every shower.

For the closet itself, improving air circulation is key. Leave closet doors ajar periodically and avoid overpacking to let air circulate. A small, passive dehumidifier unit (like a disposable moisture absorber) placed inside can help, but it's a secondary measure.

Once the moisture source is controlled, the mold must be properly remediated. Simply wiping it can spread spores. For a small patch, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner can be effective. After cleaning, consider applying a mold-resistant primer and paint to the wall; look for products specifically labeled as such, as they contain antimicrobial agents.

Given the villa's age and Jumeirah's high humidity, the issue might be deeper, like a small plumbing leak or insufficient wall insulation. If the mold returns after these steps, a professional inspection using moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify hidden dampness that DIY fixes can't see.
