How to remove black mold in closet and inform landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, the one that shares a wall with the bathroom. It wasn't there during the last cleaning a month ago, but with all the humidity lately, it’s really spread. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, and is this something I should report to my landlord immediately?

Black mold in a closet adjacent to a bathroom is a classic sign of excess moisture, often from a small leak or, more commonly in Dubai, condensation from humid air meeting cold surfaces. The high humidity we experience, combined with year-round AC use, creates perfect conditions for this.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, then wipe with a damp cloth and dry it thoroughly. However, since this appeared and spread quickly, the source of the moisture must be addressed. Check for a leaking pipe behind the wall, faulty bathroom sealant, or insufficient ventilation. You should inform your landlord immediately. Under Dubai rental law (RERA), the landlord is responsible for maintaining the property's structure, which includes addressing leaks and resultant mold that affects your health and the building's integrity. Provide clear photos and a written notification, as this creates a formal record. If the mold returns after cleaning or covers a larger area, a professional inspection is crucial to identify the hidden moisture source. Lab testing can also confirm the mold type, which is important for determining the appropriate remediation strategy, especially in a bedroom. |
