How to permanently stop mold on villa walls and wardrobes?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has had a real problem with mold on the back of our wardrobes and bedroom walls since the humidity started rising a couple of months ago. I’m constantly wiping it away with vinegar, but it just comes back within a week, and I'm worried about it spreading to our clothes. What’s the most effective long-term solution to control the moisture and prevent this from happening every summer?

The recurring mold indicates a persistent humidity problem that surface cleaning cannot fix. In Dubai's climate, this is often due to condensation from air conditioning creating a microclimate behind furniture. The most effective long-term solution requires addressing the moisture source, not just the visible growth.

Start by pulling wardrobes and beds at least two inches away from the wall to improve air circulation, which prevents the cold wall surface from condensing moisture. Use a dehumidifier in the affected rooms, especially during the more humid summer nights, aiming to maintain indoor humidity below 55%. For villas, ensure your AC system is serviced and its drainage is clear, as an overworked unit can contribute to moisture issues.

Vinegar only removes surface mold; the microscopic roots remain. For a proper clean, scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover, then use a paint primer specifically designed to block mold stains before repainting. This creates a barrier that can help prevent regrowth.

For a problem this persistent, a professional inspection is advised to identify any hidden condensation issues or leaks. Companies with their own microbiology lab can perform surface and air tests to identify the mold type and its concentration, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. This scientific approach is the only way to ensure the problem is resolved at its root and not just cosmetically treated.
