How to safely remove mold and prevent humidity in UAE bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom in my Jumeirah apartment gets really humid, and I’ve just found a patch of black mold in the corner behind my wardrobe. It’s been worse since the weather got warmer and the AC runs constantly. What’s the best way to clean this safely and are there any specific dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers that work well in UAE bedrooms to stop it from coming back?

Black mould behind furniture in a humid bedroom is a common issue in Dubai, especially during the warmer months when ACs run constantly and can create condensation. To safely remove the patch, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For a small area, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. Avoid simply painting over it, as the mould will resurface.

Preventing its return requires managing humidity. Your goal is to keep relative humidity below 60%. In a sealed bedroom, an AC alone often isn't enough. A compact, energy-efficient desiccant dehumidifier is highly effective for UAE bedrooms, as they perform well in the typical AC-cooled temperatures here. Moisture absorbers with calcium chloride crystals can help in enclosed spaces like wardrobes but are a temporary fix for a room-sized issue.

The root cause is likely poor air circulation behind the wardrobe and potential thermal bridging in the external wall, which is common in older Jumeirah buildings. Move furniture at least a few inches away from walls to allow air to flow. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and its drain line is clear, as a blocked line can contribute to indoor humidity.

If the mould covers more than one square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or you experience persistent musty odors or health symptoms, a professional inspection is advised to assess for hidden growth within the wall or AC system. A certified inspection with lab analysis can identify the species and the precise moisture source.
