Is black mold in closet an emergency or DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet on the wall facing the outside. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the room just feels damp all the time. Should I be treating this as a complete emergency and calling a professional immediately, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray this weekend?

That small patch in your closet is likely a symptom of high humidity and condensation, not necessarily a full-blown emergency requiring an immediate midnight call. The persistent damp feeling you describe is the key issue.

In Dubai's climate, this is common on exterior walls, especially during humid months. The temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot outside wall creates condensation inside the wall cavity, providing the moisture mold needs to grow.

For a patch smaller than one square foot, a DIY approach is reasonable. Use a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, not bleach, as it only removes the surface colour. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and address the moisture source. Improve air circulation in the closet and ensure your AC is running efficiently to dehumidify the room.

However, if the mold returns quickly, you notice a musty smell permeating the room, or the patch is larger than a square foot, it's time for a professional inspection. This indicates a persistent moisture problem within the wall itself that DIY cleaning won't fix. A proper assessment, often involving moisture meters and sometimes lab analysis, can identify the exact source—like a small leak or insufficient insulation—which is critical for a permanent solution.
