Dealing with black mold in bedroom: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It seems to have spread a bit since I first spotted it a couple of weeks ago. I'm worried about the health of my family and also damaging the property. Is this a job I can handle myself with bleach from Ace, or should I call in professionals, and if so, what’s the typical cost range for a small area like this in Dubai?

A visible patch of black mold spreading on an interior wall is a sign of an underlying moisture issue that needs to be addressed. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can recur quickly if the source isn't resolved.

For a small, contained area (less than 1 square meter), a careful DIY approach can work. Use a detergent solution, not just bleach, as bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the roots. Scrub the area, ensure it is completely dried, and fix any source of humidity, such as a potential AC condensation leak or lack of ventilation in the closet. However, if the mold returns, is in the HVAC system, or if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is strongly advised to identify the moisture source and assess the full extent.

Professional remediation for a small area like a closet corner typically involves containment, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial application, and most crucially, diagnosing the cause. Costs vary based on the investigation required but focus on companies that provide a clear scope of work and, ideally, post-remediation verification to confirm the space is measurably clean. The key is not just removal but ensuring it doesn't come back.
