Is this dangerous mold in our bedroom and who removes it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. The AC vent is right there and it’s always felt damp. Now my husband is waking up with a stuffy nose every morning. How dangerous is this and who in Dubai do we even call to get it professionally tested and removed?

The black, speckled patches near your AC vent are a classic sign of a condensation issue, made worse by Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use. The dampness from the cold air meeting warm room air creates an ideal environment for mould. Your husband's morning congestion is a common reaction to mould spores, indicating it's affecting your indoor air quality and should be addressed.

While the term "black mould" is alarming, the colour alone doesn't confirm the highly toxic Stachybotrys species; many common black-coloured moulds are irritants rather than extreme toxins. However, any persistent mould growth can cause allergic reactions, sinus issues, and worsen asthma, especially with prolonged exposure.

For a case like yours—visible growth with health symptoms—a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Do not attempt to remove it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. The goal is to identify the moisture source (likely the AC condensate or a leak) and properly remediate.

In Dubai, look for a certified indoor environmental professional or mould remediation company. Verify they offer independent lab analysis to identify the mould species, as this determines the removal protocol. Reputable companies will provide a detailed report with before-and-after testing to confirm the spore count has been returned to safe levels. They should also identify and rectify the moisture source to prevent recurrence, which is as crucial as the cleaning itself.
